Steve Messam's land installation, "HUSH" uses hundreds of fabric sails suspended in rows over a 400-meter-long mining gully. The installation invites visitors to walk under, through and around, for an immersive experience.⠀ ⠀ Hush was commissioned by the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in contemplation of the geological heritage of the area. The title refers to the old surface-mining practice of ‘hushing’, where a head of water would be released to gouge out a channel, exposing mineral seams.⠀ ⠀ image via @contemporaryval

#2019Recap ‘Apollo’ - Peterlee, Co. Durham, UK. . So many pieces this year. But as it was my 50th it felt right to celebrate other 50ths - the moon landings and Pasmore’s brazen pavilion in the heart of a housing estate. The brief was to be playful. My working title for this was ‘blow up’ so it would be ‘Blow up’, the Apollo Pavilion - which is what a lot of people seem to want to do. But I thought it sounded too much like a sex toy so I scrapped that idea. Another piece that was far more than any pictures do justice. You really needed to be there. #2019Recap ‘Watched’ - Hanstholm, Denmark. . A couple of trips to Denmark resulted in a new body of work. ‘Watched’ looked at the ruins of the Atlantic Wall in and around the town. The timescale was short and the workload was intense, but the results were all the more rewarding for it. It was also good to spend time with other artists and be part of a group show. Plus I got to stay at a lighthouse, so what’s not to like?! . . . #artinstallation #installationart #inflatableart #inflatablearchitecture #concrete #atlanticwall #bunkers #lighthouse #northatlantic #stevemessam #2019

#2019Recap ‘Cell’ - Llandrindod Wells, Wales, UK . I got to work with some amazing people this year. Not least working on the production design with Impelo dance company. An easily portable set for a show based on cellular biology. I wanted to transport the audience down to a microscopic level by placing them and the dancers within a space populated with giant cells. An incredible team project working alongside the dancers, composer and research scientists as well as the wonderful team who built the inflatable pieces. . . . #installationart #artinstallation #inflatable #inflatableart #setdesign #microbiology #cellularbiology #science #dance #immersiveart #archive #stevemessam #2019

#2019Recap ‘Bubble Pile’ - Bicester Village, Oxfordshire, UK. . In February the first batch of bubbles were joined by this pile. Another inflatable artwork (it was a bit of theme in 2019), the pile was actually one single piece inflated by a single fan. Standing at around 5m high it marked one of the entrances to the retail village in their Chinese New Year colour palette. . . . #artinstallation #installationart #inflatableart #textiles #red #stevemessam #2019

#DecadeAdvent Day Twenty-Four ‘Carpet’ - Holy Island, Northumberland, UK. 2013 . ‘Carpet’ was 10,000 jars of coloured in on the spot the Lindisfarne Gospels were made to celebrate their (temporary) return to the North East of England. Rather than recreating an illustration from the original I created a new, abstract pattern using the same natural mathematics used in the 7th C. I only needed to measure one of the 10m long sides. Everything else was based on this one line using string to draw circles to determine all the other elements. So that’s it for this year. And this decade. Hope you’ve enjoyed this journey as much as I have. I already know what next years Advent theme will be. Just 11 more months to wait for that! . . . #artinstallation #installationart #heritage #history #design #saxondesign #lindisfarnegospels #colour #vegetableink #jars #northumberland #historicengland #archive #backcatalogue #stevemessam #2013

#DecadeAdvent Day Twenty-Four ‘Carpet’ - Holy Island, Northumberland, UK. 2013 . The colours in the illuminations of the Lindisfarne Gospels were all made from things found on the island - plant, mineral and animal colours (you don’t want to know how they got purple from whelks!). However, as some of these are toxic I couldn’t use them on this environmentally sensitive site. Instead I colour matched them with vegetable based dies in water. The 10,000+ jars took 3 days to fill and install with an average strike rate of one every 8 seconds! . . . #artinstallation #installationart #heritage #history #design #saxondesign #lindisfarnegospels #colour #vegetableink #jars #northumberland #historicengland #archive #backcatalogue #stevemessam #2013

#DecadeAdvent Day Twenty-Four ‘Carpet’ - Holy Island, Northumberland, UK. 2013 . So we reach the last day of this look back over the past 10 years. It’s been a bit of a journey and I’ve rediscovered pieces I may have dismissed at the time and unearthed pictures I’ve never really seen before. This was always a list in no particular order. The only criteria was it had to have been created in the last 10 years. I also limited the red pieces as I did a #redAdvent last year. Having said that I did actually give it some thought regarding the final day. This is ‘Carpet’ - an installation in Lindisfarne Priory made of 10,000 jars of coloured ink on the spot where the Lindisfarne Gospels was created. I’ve had a good look back and I’m quite sure I’ve never posted photos of this on Instagram before. #DecadeAdvent Day Twenty-Three ‘When the Red Rose in Blackpool’ - Blackpool, Lancashire. 2016 . It’s another red piece I know, but I just like this photo. It’s an iPhone pic, but as they say, the best camera is the one you have in your hand at the time. The Edwardian cast iron seating shelters are on the quieter North Promenade. A reminder of the seaside resort history of Blackpool before the hen nights and heroin. As grade II listed structures they were another piece that couldn’t attach to the fabric of the building. In this instance the inflatable bubble wraps around the building and hugs it. Once inflated it’s a very stable piece - just as well given it’s right on the seafront. . . . #inflatableart #installationart #artinstallation #architecture #inflatablearchitecture #heritage #listedbuilding #seaside #blackpool #northpromenade #blackpoolilluminations #greatbritishseaside #red #inflatable #backcatalogue #archive #stevemessam #2016

It’s another piece that’s a bit lost in photos - it only really worked while you were inside it. ‘Rive’ was a series of wafer-thin flat shards of light in the absolute darkness of a vast cavernous slate mine. A very sculptural piece - the shards drawn from the way slate is split into thin sheets. The shards appeared solid and tangible yet made of light you could walk right through them. Either way, this is the most wintry piece I’ve done yet. It was another personal piece from back in 2012 when I was doing quite a few balloon and colour-based experiments in the landscape. #DecadeAdvent Day Twenty ‘Whistle’ - Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK. 2018 . A big part of ‘Whistle’ was the fabrication process itself - from the research in whistle design and engineering to the internet of things technology that ran the sequencing. Drawing on a rich heritage of engineering in the North East of England I got to work with some amazing people across the whole region to make this piece happen. #DecadeAdvent Day Twenty ‘Whistle’ - Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK. 2018 . Always a difficult one to tell in photos. This was a 2-mile long sound installation around the city of Newcastle. 16 brass replica steam engine whistles were sited along the route of the medieval town wall. At precisely 1pm every day they would all sound in unison at full volume. While it was a huge piece with a fair amount of presence in a busy city, the whistles themselves were only 20cm high and in places on the highest rooftops. This whole piece was huge logistical undertaking - not just the scale of the piece or the technology required to keep it working accurately, but also getting permissions to install work on mostly listed buildings and scheduled ancient monuments. The privilege of getting access to those sites and the views from the top was more than worth it. . . . #artinstallation #installationart #soundinstallation #soundart #whistles #engineering #heritage #railwayengineering #railwayheritage #newcastle #toonwall #rooftop #toot #backcatalogue #archive #stevemessam #2018

I was trying to avoid too many red pieces as last year I did a #RedAdvent of just red pieces. However, I couldn’t really do a look back at the last 10 years of projects without including ‘PaperBridge’. It was such a pivotal moment for me. How I thought about landscape, colour, engineering, materials and public engagement. It all came together in something quite magical and probably the closest I’ve come to something some regard as iconic (whatever that means). There was barely any wind, but as the day dawned and daylight settled in the clouds shifted revealing the artwork hanging motionless and glistening with the moisture. Within 10 minutes of this the cloud had risen and the flags were up and rattling in a raucous westerlie. Two hours later and the whole piece was sitting back in its yellow sacks in the village hall. It was a small edition of just 50 copies but they all sold within a week! I was bowled over by the level of support support for these - and apologies to those who missed out that time. ‘Hush’ was such a colossal installation, the installation process was a logistical effort in itself. Each span was measured and marked so that the correct number of flags and length of rope could be prepared beforehand. 60 large sacks were specially fabricated in the same recyclable textile to get everything up onto site. . . . #artinstallation #installationart #environmentalart #landscape #textiles #saffronyellow #northpennines #heritage #hushing #publication #photobook #smallpublisher #photoessay #backcatalogue #archive #stevemessam #2019

#DecadeAdvent Day Seventeen ‘Hush’ - Newbiggin Common, Co. Durham, UK. 2019 . ‘Hush’ - a photo-essay is now available from FoldPress. There’s still time for delivery by Xmas to UK addresses. This piece high in the North Pennines this summer seemed to change every few minutes. The constantly shifting light and extremes of wind (along with occasional rain, hail and anything else the North Pennine weather could come up with) meant this piece was never the same two days running. This is very much the experiential nature of my larger artworks - you really do need to be there to understand it. However, as it was so close to where I live I was on site everyday trying to capture how it felt. The ‘Hush’ book from FoldPress is the result of that. A 36 page photo-essay exploring the installation over 18 days in July this year. It’s basically the same format as the recent ‘Apollo’ book although I’ve made some subtle tweaks to improve the lay of the pages. The ‘Apollo’ book sold out within a week. I’m expecting ‘Hush’ to be equally popular. Once the edition of 50 is gone it won’t be reprinted so don’t leave it too long if you want one. #DecadeAdvent Day Fifteen ‘Ravens’ - Haworth, West Yorkshire. UK. 2014 . Down to the last 10 pieces in this look back at the decade. There’s no order to these or ranking, but this is another that sits high in my memory. ‘Ravens’ is a landscape drawing commissioned for the Tour de France Grand Départ in 2014. Built on a scale to be seen from the TV helicopters following the race, I also wanted it to say something about the use of land in the wider landscape. I worked with the farmer for this site to understand the pressures of the land and to ensure it was still useable for the 3 months the piece was on show. The drawing was made by selective cutting of the grass at regular periods. The older grass and newer encourages growth have different colours. When first cut the shorter grass is almost scalped to a parched colour. After a few weeks (depending on the weather etc) the new grass becomes deeper in colour while the taller grass becomes paler and the pattern inverts. The whole process is entirely natural and no paint or chemicals are needed. The piece just required some occasional recutting , following the lines while they were still visible. . . . #artinstallation #installationart #landscape #environmentalart #grass #etching #drawing #tourdefrance #letourdefrance #yorkshire #haworth #bronte #brontecountry #sheep #agriculture #agriart #sheepfarming #swaledalesheep #archive #backcatalogue #stevemessam #2014

#DecadeAdvent Day Fourteen ‘Tower’ - Redcar, Cleveland. UK. 2016 . The stables at Kirkleatham Hall are a thing of beauty. To the front they have a very grand Palladian facade - all pillars and tall windows. But the inside of the stable yard is this stunning collection of geometric shapes in brick. As with all 18th century places, the purpose or use of the tower is a little ambiguous - some day it was for viewing the horses from above to better judge their form, but this is as likely to be a fabricated story as it is fact. I wanted to create something that looked at the geometrical nature of the buildings - all cylinders and cones and square blocks. The grade II listed status of the building again meant there was no fixings into the structure. To add to the complications the stairs up the tower were unsafe so it had to be installed from the outside only by a cherry picker. The piece was inflated from a single fan with metres of flexible ducting fed around the remains of the spiral staircase inside. A fourth spike protruded from an upper window into the main building. . . . #installationart #artinstallation #inflatableart #heritage #architecture #palladianarchitecture #redcar #cleveland #festivalofthrift #navigatornorth #stable #temporary #orange #spikes #archive #backcatalogue #stevemessam #2016

The ventilation and cooling systems up in the roof are amazing in their complexity. So very different from the shelves of books on the main floors. While these look like images of white light boxes illuminating spaces there are probably half bc a dozen lights dotted around to create the image captured. All told these are just moments created and documented. The starting point for that was getting a whistle from an engine that used to work the line and seeing how it worked. Here we’re testing it on compressed air so the pitch is much lower than on steam. We then replicated that whistle and added a tuning baffle inside to bring it up to working pitch. Worth remembering these things are LOUD! You can easily hear them a mile away on the mountains. . . . #artinstallation #instsllationart #soundart #railway #technology #heritage #landscape #nationalparks #backcatalogue #stevemessam #2014

#DecadeAdvent Day Eleven ‘Whistle’ - Glen Ogle, Scotland. UK. 2014 . Creating a cascade of steam engine whistles up 2 miles of old railway in the highlands is not without its challenges. Not least how to control a piece over that distance. There’s certainly no wifi! In Glen Ogle itself there is no mobile phone signal either. The test piece used radio transmitters with a 1km range. Even then this was limited to line of sight given the terrain, so the signal was daisy-chained at 200m intervals . . . #artinstallation #installationart #soundart #ruralart #landscape #technology #railway #heritage #nationalparks #testpiece #archive #backcatalogue #stevemessam #2014

#DecadeAdvent Day Eleven ‘Whistle’ - Glen Ogle, Scotland. UK. 2014 . This one took some hunting down. For some reason everything I did in 2013 and 2014 aren’t archived where everything else is. In fact there seems to be no rhyme or reason to where those images live. To compound those issues I didn’t actually document this project at the time as there was a separate film maker covering some of it. So despite this being the first of my really big projects, very little remains of it. That it was a sound installation too so there was nothing to see doesn’t help either. So this is ‘Whistle’. The first version. This is a cascade of 2 miles of steam engine whistles along a former railway line in the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. The railways were responsible for bringing large numbers of people out of the crowded and polluted cities and into what was then wilderness and was the main driver in establishing what was to become National Parks in the U.K. The mechanical limitations of railways meant they tended to hug contours around the landscape rather than go up and down hills, so they were often built across landscapes where there were no roads (or people). Bigger terrain would be bridged or tunnelled. Glen Ogle is a main mountain pass in the highlands - a natural route between major hills and mountains. There have been tracks and roads up the pass for centuries. However, for the railway to negotiate the pass it has to cling to one side of the valley on the side of a steep slope. Where the terrain got too steep the railway leaps across a section on a large sweeping viaduct. This was railway engineering pushed to its absolute limits by the landscape. The railway is now long gone but I wanted to explore that history of how people rediscovered the landscape. I was also interested in how sound can map the landscape - how sound travels and reacts to changing terrain. This 2 mile piece was a test for a proposed 18 mile piece that traced the landscape across the highland fault. This is one of the first 8 whistles in that test. They may not have looked tidy but the cascade of whistles through the Glen created a hanging echo of sound.

#Repost @rougeit with @get_repost ・・・ #DecadeAdvent Day Eight: ‘Lookout’ - Dunmail Raise, Cumbria. UK. 2014 . Do you know how difficult it is to buy Xmas decorations, in bulk, in April? This WWII ‘pillbox’ sits at the watershed point of Dunmail Raise in the Lake District - a mountain pass north of Grasmere that marks the boundary between the south and north of the county. A nearby cairn marks the resting place of the Cumbrian (Dane) King Dunmail killed by the Saxons in 975. It’s a strategic vantage point as any north-south traffic has to pass this way. Over 28,000 of these concrete bunkers were built in 1940 as part of the defences in the event of an invasion by the German army. Sat in the heart of the Lake District National Park this one has one of the best views. ‘Lookout’ was one of a series of pieces I made that explored the history of looking at the landscape. The pillbox bunker was clad in around 4000 silver baubles. The effect is a little like a fly’s eye where the landscape is reflected and repeated thousands of times across the surface. It also references the ‘Claude Glass’ mirrors used by the first tourists to the lakes. A small lens in one of the gun apertures transformed the inside into a camera obscura. . . . #artinstallation #installationart #landscape #viewingstation #lookoutpost #pillbox #concrete #concretearchitecture #lakedistrict #lakedistrictnationalpark #heritage #baubles #reflections #shiny #archive #backcatalogue #stevemessam #2014

#DecadeAdvent Day Ten: ‘Cortex’ - Cumbria, UK & Suzhou, China 2012. . Here’s the version of ‘Cortex’ I made in China. Not quite the type of tree I was after but you can’t really get these things off the shelf. There are thousands of pieces on this. I have no idea how many thousands, but safe to say it was lots. The piece was shown on the James Cropper trade stand in Shanghai before returning to Suzhou where it sits in a glass case at the School of Art and Design. . . . #environmentalart #wood #water #suzhou #colour #colouredpaper #texture #surface #landscape #archive #backcatalogue #stevemessam #2012

#DecadeAdvent Day Ten: ‘Cortex’ - Cumbria, UK & Suzhou, China 2012. . Every year the good folk at Pantone®️ announce a ‘colour of the year’. It’s a complicated process and I’m sure involves untold layers of algorithms to get to it every year. For 2020 it’s 19-4052. Otherwise known as Classic Blue. While this piece isn’t strictly Pantone 19-4052 I haven’t made very many pieces in blue. In fact I can only think of two if you count this two-site piece as one. This is one of the pieces I made with James Cropper paper mill. This first piece is a working moquette made from thousands of die-cut paper shapes individually nailed onto a tree stump. The pieces re-skin the wood and reveal its contours by the way the colour of the paper moves in the light. Paper is made from wood and water so this piece was photographed in Esthwaite Water in the Lake District. . . . #environmentalart #wood #water #lakedistrict #colour #colouredpaper #texture #surface #landscape #archive #backcatalogue #stevemessam #2012

#DecadeAdvent Day Nine ‘PaperCatwalk’ - The Bowes Museum, Co. Durham. UK. 2018 . Another of my hidden pieces. We built this for a major fashion photography retrospective. It’s a fully functioning catwalk made entirely of 6000 white cardboard tubes. The piece snaked down the gallery room wrapping around the pillars. Only the tubes around the outside edge were glued to stop people from knocking them over. What’s nice about this looking back at the last 10 years of installations is seeing recurring themes and the development of some core ideas. . . . #artinstallation #installationart #paper #paperengineering #cardboard #catwalk #architecture #geometry #monochrome #leica #archive #backcatalogue #stevemessam #2018

#DecadeAdvent Day Seven ‘Nest’ - Stainmore, Cumbria. UK. 2012 . Another pic of ‘Nest’ from 2012. All the paper was the same shade of grey and echoed the grey of the tree trunk. #DecadeAdvent Day Seven ‘Nest’ - Stainmore, Cumbria. UK. 2012 . Further down the hill from the barn that was yesterday’s ‘Sentinel’ is a little woodland. There’s a little beck in there and a 10ft waterfall we called the secret waterfall because no one ever went there. It was a bit remote to be fair and we lived at the top of the hill where it was even wilder and more remote. It was a great place to be for a while. Needless to say I did a lot of playing around in those woods. ‘Nest ’ came about while playing around with paper structures with a local paper mill. It’s made from truncated cones of paper stapled together around the tree trunk. I wanted something that felt a bit like a wasp nest but built more like a bee hive. I built a couple of these that year - they’re deceptively big so quite a thing to come across in the woods. Although of course probably no one ever did. . . . #installationart #artinstallation #ruralart #paper #paperengineering #naturalforms #geometry #nest #woodlands #archive #backcatalogue #stevemessam #2012

#DecadeAdvent Day Six ‘Sentinel’ - North Stainmore, Cumbria. UK. 2010 . Right back to the beginning of the decade for this one. This fellside barn sits looking over the Upper Eden Valley - a remnant from the agricultural past and unused. We wrapped this in the raw fleeces of Swaledale sheep - a breed developed to make these ‘hog houses’ redundant. This was a personal project. I lived a couple of fields further up the fell so knew the building well. Sometimes it’s nice to just do these things without all the pressures commissions bring. It took some hunting to find the few images I have of this - I’ve previously used the same two photos for years. Big surprise to find that I’d actual shot a few more and some were even RAW files - sonn mi etching I rarely did back then as I didn’t have the software to process them. There was even some old iPhone snaps of the install process that I’d completely forgotten about. But it was only 10 years ago! . . . #artinstallation #installationart #ruralart #barns #agriculture #heritage #landscapeart #textileart #textiles #vernaculararchitecture #swaledalesheep #northpenninesaonb #northpennines #edenvalley #archive #backcatalogue #2010 #stevemessam

#DecadeAdvent Day Five ‘Curlew Machine’ - the Bowes Museum, Co. Durham. UK. 2014 . *SOUND ON* Over the past 10 years I’ve only shown work in 3 galleries. This installation is in my local museum - a wonderful French Chateaux in the north of England. The nearby wild upland landscapes of the North Pennines come alive with the distant sounds of Curlews and Lapwings every spring. Such a distinctive sound it carries over those vast landscapes and always seems distant. I wanted to bring some of that into the museum by using the lively acoustics of the barrel vaulted painting gallery on the top floor to echo around the entire building. There’s a lot going on with this piece. The sound is not a copy of any one species of bird but more a generic feeling of waders. The mechanical instrument references the 18thC silver swan automata - the star exhibit in the museum. The machine doesn’t make the sound mechanically - it’s a recording of the brass whistle I built around the pitch and timbre of Curlews played on a random timer. The actual mechanics curlews use to make their bubbling call is unbelievably complex but not all that dissimilar to lip-trilling on a French horn - but that’s a whole different story... There’s not an awful lot of documentation of this piece so I may struggle to post additional pics, but I’ve included it as probably my least known piece yet it was the starting point for so many others that we’ll get to soon. . . . #artinstallation #installationart #soundinstallation #gallery #indoors #automata #mechanical #brass #curlew #sound #paintinggallery #accoustics #northpennines #bowesmuseum #archive #backcatalogue #2014 #stevemessam
